House of Usher by Anirog is a difficult platform game based on the Edgar Allen Poe story of a haunted palace. You start in a corridor where you can access various rooms apart from one, which holds the final screen. Once you have worked through the screens you will be able to reach the final one to complete the game. Each level is a single screen where you have to jump across platforms and collect items while avoiding obstacles and creatures. Playing this game is a nightmare. The jumps have to be pixel perfect and the control method is clumsy and unforgiving. It will have you tearing your hair out. The game is pretty short but very difficult due to the awkwardness of the controls. Graphically it’s quite basic but looks ok for a simple platform game but there’s not an awful lot to see or do. If you haven’t played this one before I’d probably avoid it as it’s not fun to play and it’s quite dull.
Game complete. Time to enter your name…
The End.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I saved my progress as I beat each room until I reached the end.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The final screen shows an alphabet above a platform. You are prompted to select a letter and finish the game. The correct letter is B (as the secret word is Baltimore). Once you select it, words appear on the screen which read ‘CONGRATULATIONS. YOU ARE THE NEW EARL OF USHER. PLEASE ENTER YOUR NAME’. Once you enter your name, the screen and border flash varous colours and the words ‘THE ACTUAL EARL OF USHER IS …. (Followed by your name)‘.
Neil: Bizarre. What a weird game.
FINAL SAY: A nasty little game with a dull ending. I’m glad it’s all over with.

G.E. RATING: 1 / 10

Thank you for putting this one up for me 😊 this was a weird game and I was about ten years old back then so it stuck in my head. I always wanted to know what the secret was behind that mysterious final door.

Turns out it really wasnt worth the 30 year wait!
