Another one of those games that baffled me as a kid was Rasterscan by Mastertronic… I remember a mate buying this budget game back in 1987, but between us we didn’t get very far. I think we managed to open a door or two, but very little else.
The aim of the game is to get the damaged spaceship up and running again using a repair droid – which looks and moves rather like a snooker ball. You have to repair leaks, crack codes to open doors and activate switches in the right sequences to fire up useful machines. It’s difficult to get your head around but once you understand it, it’s very simple. The main problem is the annoying leak that recurs every so often outside the ship which means several dull trips back outside to repair it before you can get on with the next task. It looks very simple, plays easily but can be confusing – even though the ship is quite small. The control method is sometimes annoying when you start bouncing around uncontrollably and there’s very little in terms of action. This one is for the C64 thinkers. Steer well clear if you just want to wrestle your joystick and blow things up.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
Neil: I used a map and the supplied instructions. They weren’t very clear, but with a bit of patience and a few hours hard work I finally got it all cracked.
Vinny: I cheated! I looked through the code and found the end. Just load the game, freeze it using an Action Replay Cart (or something similar) and enter POKE 4207,1. Restart the game and the ending will kick in.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once all systems are up and running you get to guide your ship off the scanner and out of danger (which appears as a simple dot on the scanner in the main cockpit area – very disappointing). The ending is then just a simple message in coloured text which reads ‘MSB HAS WON. HIS MISSION IS COMPLETE!’
COMMENTS:
Neil: These are the painful moments of C64 gaming – when you get a slap in the face off the programmer for all your hard work. Another C64 shocker. 0.5/10.
Vinny: Poor Neil. All that effort for a cack ending! 0.5/10 from me too!
Andrew Fisher: All I remember about this one was an odd-looking screenshot in ZZAP and a comment about how complex it was to save the game progress. So it’s something I’ve never played. And given the ending, I doubt I will put any effort into changing that…
Gaz Spence: Nice to see a game that I never understood completed. Such a shame that the ending is a seriously boring text affair.
Andy Vaisey: I bought this despite the ZZAP!64 review. There was something about the description that appealed for some reason. There is quite an original idea/game thrashing around here, which is unfortunately masked by an awkward control method and biblically hard puzzles.
I never completed it and good job; this ending may have raised the blood pressure in a bad way…
FINAL SAY: I’m just off to put my head in the oven…
