Castle Master II – The Crypt was a challenge I had to undertake having beaten the first Castle Master game. I thoroughly enjoyed playing the first game and the second one is much more of the same (“it’s exactly the same game engine” – Vinny). This time you have to escape a crypt. You start on the bottom floor and have to work your way up by solving puzzles as you progress. The graphics are your typical Freescape standard and again you have to find hidden keys and kill spirits that haunt most rooms. To fully enjoy the game you will need to speed it up by using an emulator, as the graphics are painfully slow at normal speed. This game is another top C64 title which I thoroughly recommend. It’s an original and atmospheric challenge that will keep you busy for a while…
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I played it while using some maps and solutions I found online.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have opened the drawbridge and walked outside the game is beaten. The word ‘ESCAPE!!’ appears in the bottom corner as the player runs away from the castle as you see it shrink into the distance. A short jingle plays and your score, total number of keys and amount of spirits destroyed are shown at the bottom of the screen.
Neil: Seen it all before. It’s a shame they didn’t improve on the original ending. Don’t let it put you off playing though. 2/10.
Vinny: It’s a shame that the programmer didn’t improve the game engine, but I suppose he thought that if it ain’t broke…
I’m going to give this ending 0.5 more than Castle Master 1, just for the fact that it shows you escaping from the Crypt, which is more of a visual epilogue. In my mind, definitely a more positive experience.
Andrew Fisher: Did you know that this (and the second Total Eclipse game) were initially only available through The Home Computer Club mail order service?
I suppose you can say the same about this as the first one, slightly disappointing in that not a lot happens but clever how it uses the “existing” graphics to create the end sequence. 3/10.
Gaz Spence: Although similar, I actually prefer the ending to this one rather than the original game. It basically represents someone ‘legging it’ from the Castle. Do you think the guy is still running? Given the speed of Freescape he (or she) has probably done around 400 metres by now… 🙂
Brendan Phoenix: Is there a 3rd Castle Master game? One that was included as a freebie at Christmas? Or is my mind playing tricks again?
FINAL SAY: Very similar to the original game ending.
