If this game was released by Codemasters, it would have been called “Professional Mountain Climbing Simulator”, which would have been a fitting title.
Final Assault is quite tedious at the beginning when you have to determine SO MANY different aspects of your climbing expedition, before you can do any climbing! It even has you thinking about the weight of your backpack! Once you’ve got past the initial selection process (YAWN), the game just doesn’t redeem it’s and quick goes downhill (no pun intended). Definitely NOT a winning title for Epyx, who have enjoyed a healthy release of Commodore 64 games. What on earth went wrong?!
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Nostalgia have released a cracked version that allows you to press ‘Q’ during game play, which takes you straight to the ending sequence. Thank God for that!
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: You get to see your mountaineer at the peak of the mountain, planting an American flag. This is accompanied by a rendition of ‘A star spangled banner’… #Oh say can you seeeee…#.
You then get an ending message that reads: “CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE NOW AMONG OTHER GREAT MOUNTAIN HEROES IN THE FINAL ASSAULT HIGH SCORE RANKS.“
The final section shows our intrepid adventurer on the front cover of ‘The Daily News’.
Brendan: Just a really average ending – planting a flag on top of the peak ( the USA national anthem ) a congratulations screen, high score table and newspaper headline. 4/10.
Vinny: I’m quite impressed with this ending; I thought it was just the picture of the mountaineer, and the music, but there’s more! The newspaper clipping is a nice touch to the ending, and there’s even a ‘CONGRATULATIONS’ message.
By the way – keep listening to the tune because it gets a little adventurous in places 🙂
Matt Rogers: I like the initial piccy, but the tune comes straight from the gates of hell. I think a 5 is merited.
Stefan (Guerilla): Thank you so much for putting this up!
I always found these newspaper clips rather cheesy (think PAPERBOY and whatnot), but thrown in in addition to a proper ending screen with a (rather unoriginal) tune, I wouldn’t complain. I certainly would feel satisfied if I ever would have managed to solve this one. A 6/10 doesn’t seem to high to me!
Andrew Fisher: A reasonably strong ending for an average game this.
FINAL SAY: More than I expected!
G.E. RATING: 5 / 10
