Penetrator by Melbourne House is a clone of the arcade game Scramble. It’s not to be confused with the dodgy film that you may have found hidden under your dad’s bed as a kid (“Eh-what?! Something you want to tell us, Neil” – Vinny). The objective is pretty simple – guide your ship across the scrolling landscape while blasting everything that you see and avoiding the cavern walls. Eventually the scrolling stops and the game is beaten.
It’s not a very good version of the classic arcade game. The sprites are chunky and pretty badly drawn, the action is very repetitive and the game itself is pretty short. It’s one of the few games that I prefer on the Spectrum!

You reach the end…

But what’s this?!

The End!
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
Neil: I played it without cheats, but saved my position every few minutes.
Vinny: I cheated! To see the ending, freeze the game during play using an Action Replay Cartridge, enter MONITOR mode, and type G 4E7C (this dirty jumps you to location $4E7C, which is the ending).
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: At the end of the landscape, there is a small base positioned at the bottom of a pit. Firing a few bombs down on top of it causes it to explode and the game is complete. The explosion is a poor fireworks display which lasts until you press the fire button. The game then restarts.
COMMENTS:
Neil: There’s no ‘Well done’, or ‘Congratulations’, just a short explosion of pixels. It’s really not worth the effort.  1/10.
Vinny: Unfortunately there’s not much going on here. Just a a few simple fireworks. 1/10 from me too.
Andrew Fisher: Your long pointy ship has to penetrate deep into a secret dark cave… What’s rude about that? 😉
A blatant clone has to offer something good to be worth playing. A poor version of Scramble and a very poor ending.
Gaz Spence: Sadly the game’s name is about the only thing going for it. That’s where the cheap thrills end. A disappointing game and the ending is something of a premature ejaculation I dare say.
Andy Vaisey: Poor poor poor all round. Not so much penetrator as dipstick.
FINAL SAY: I’m glad it’s over. What a boring experience.

G.E. RATING: 1 / 10
