Rally cross by Anco is a overhead view car racing game by Anco. It’s not one I’d played before and was surprised to find it to be quite a decent race game. It’s similar to Super Sprint and many of those types of race games, where you can upgrade your car in order to win races and progress through the courses. The graphics are good, there are plenty of tracks, it handles pretty well and it’s fun to play. It’s quite a challenge though and will require a lot of practice to master. I went for the easier option of cheating.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used a cheat that allowed me to skip courses and finish in first place.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: If you manage to win or cheat your way to the top of the leaderboard you get to see the end screen. It’s basically the same as the screen between races where you see a girl in a bikini and stilettos holding up a sign with the word ‘WINNER‘ on it. The only difference is that it has the words ‘YOU ARE THE RALLY CROSS CHAMPION‘, written beside the picture.
Neil: As expected really. It’s not enough reward for beating such a tough racing game. Glad I cheated on this one. 3/10.
Vinny: Now THAT’S a boring ending. At least we could have seen the winner opening a bottle of champagne or something like that! And ending tune would have been good too! For 1989, this is a very poor ending. 1/10 from me.
Andrew Fisher: She’s uglier than the girls on Super Off Road. Back to the pits for this ending.
Gaz Spence: One of the more obscure top down racers and not too bad. However, very little effort was put into the ending although at least the game doesn’t just loop a’la Ivan Stewart’s.
Andrew Fisher: The review did hype the game, I’ve not played it much but it isn’t as good as Op Wolf despite the improved graphics. Since the ending came from the arcade game, it was bound to be poor.
Brendan Phoenix: Used to have this on the Amiga and loved it (light came on when it was night racing).
What a pity she didn’t whip off her bikini top in celebration.
FINAL SAY: Standard racing game ending.
