Captain Kidd by Bug-Byte is a simple arcade game based on the old classic Grid-Trap. The aim is to defuse the bombs within the grid before they explode. It’s a very basic game that will appeal to the younger gamer as it’s simple to play and the initial levels are not too difficult. The graphics are simple, with basic sprites and 3D boxes that form the grids.
It’s pretty dull and pretty short, but ok for a quick fix of retro arcade action…

The End.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I just worked my way through the levels and saved my progress after each one was completed. (“I created a crazy hack that allowed me to skip through all the levels at the touch of a button, and also jump straight to the ending – along with a whole host of other features. You can download it from the link above” – Vinny)
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The end shows a large treasure chest full of gold with your final score appearing on the front of it. The message above it reads ‘CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE FOUND THE TREASURE OF CAPTAIN KIDD‘. A jolly tune also plays in the background (The Entertainer I believe).
COMMENTS:
Neil: That’s actually not too bad considering the game itself. 3/10.
Vinny: Though this game is a little simple in concept, I actually enjoyed it. I honestly can’t believe that ZZAP!64 only gave it an overall score of 32%! The only real downside for me is that it only has 10 levels! It could have done with another 20-30 as there is PLENTY of spare space in the code.
As for the ending… it’s really good for this style of game and the era it was produced. I’m going to give it 4/10 for the effort.
Andrew Fisher: It’s a game I’ve played very briefly after reading the bad reviews, but I did not realise it was so short at only 10 levels.
End picture is alright, tune is acceptable… An ending then, but not outstanding.
Andy Vaisey: An old simple game, with an unexpected ending. Ok, it’s not a blinder of an ending, but it offers more than many other games, with a picture and a tune. It does then commit one of my pet hates by showing ‘Game Over’ after the ending screen. Never saw the point in that and so many games do it…
Gaz Spence: Some of the ZZAP! Ratings sort of missed the point – okay the game wasn’t innovative or sexy but as a budget release it offered decent playability. The ending is alright with some effort made, even if the perspective of the chest is way off.
FINAL SAY: I expected a lot less from this one.
