I do love a platform game. I still get excited (easy!) when I play Monty on the Run or Thing on a Spring – two of my all-time favourite Commodore 64 games. There’s something about platform games that taps into our natural instinct to survive and get to the end – well it is for me 🙂 On the flip side, I HATE hard platform games…
Bangers and Mash by Alternative software is a nice enough platform game, and could have been so much better if it wasn’t frustratingly hard. Accuracy seems to be the key to this one, but only a few millimetres out, and you could fall all the way back to a start point – which is SERIOUSLY annoying! It’s a shame because there’s definitely potential here, but unfortunately it’s marred by the ridiculous game play. Needless to say that I gave up on ever completing this one, but Brendan seemed to see it through and get to the end…
Up, up and awaaaaaay…
“Ooo… a front door.”
“I fancy playing Knock-down-ginger!”
“I’ll knock and then scarper.”
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
Vinny: I have since created a crazy hack for this game that has 37 extra in-game features; one of them being the ability to skip through to the game ending. You can download the crazy hack from the link area above.
He cheats of course!
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once Bangers has collected the final item of fruit (and I suppose, find a balloon…), he floats up to the top of the tree where the balloon conveniently POPS just outside the tree house for Bangers to land on. He walks over to the door whilst a quick ending ditty plays. This is followed by the ‘GAME OVER‘ screen.
Brendan: Not much to speak of… the balloon takes you to your tree house at and it ends with you outside your door – then a ‘GAME OVER‘ message appears. 2/10.
Vinny: Hmmm… it’s tough to make out whether this is a good or bad ending. There’s certainly something missing and that’s how you’re left feeling – as if something is missing. It could have had an epilogue to tell us what was happening. Still – at least there’s a bit of animation. 4/10 from me.
Andrew Fisher: Apparently based on a children’s TV series, but I’ve never seen it… Very ordinary platform game, very ordinary ending.
FINAL SAY: A ‘congratulations’ would have been nice!
