This conversion by After Burner had some beating over the years, and rightly so; it’s an absolute crime to have released such a poor game. I mean – take a look at games such as Hunter Patrol (Mastertronic), Mig-29 (Codemasters), which aren’t particularly great games, but that achieve the effect that I think After Burner should have produced. The irony is, the Mastertronic and Codemasters games were only £1.99 and After Burner was originally a full-price title!
Anyway, babble aside, here’s the ending…
The final level is complete.
Coming in to land…
…we have touch-down.
Home sweet home.
Mission complete.
The End.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Looks live Ivan used a multitude of cheats.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Not much apart from the jet comes into land and then the words: “MISSION COMPLETE” are displayed.
Vinny: I’ve only played this game for a few minutes as I found it very limiting and no way near as good as the arcade version. In fact, this is a seriously POOR conversion and I am sure that many of you out there purchased a copy and felt totally ripped off. Anyway, the ending consists of the words ‘MISSION COMPLETE’ and no sound whatsoever! A load of cack.
Brendan Phoenix: Am I the only one who thinks the arcade version was rubbish as well? Graphics were indeed great but the gameplay sucks.
Kungfufurby: So the mission is complete. Good. Now that the mission is complete it’s time to go to Mission 2: Another game.
Andy Vaisey: Rubbish game, rubbish ending. Simples.
Andrew Fisher: All the computer versions were terrible, Argonaut Software really dropped the ball on that one. The US version has better graphics but still lacks gameplay.
FINAL SAY: Tut, tut, tut.

G.E. RATING: 1 / 10

One Response to After Burner by Activision

  1. E. Burns says:

Never managed to play this ghastly mess for any length of time, but I must give it credit on one count: it makes a sincere (albeit doomed) effort to cram as much of the coin-op as it can onto the C64, including the canyon stages and the smoke trail effects, which the better-regarded US C64 version and very similar Sega Master System skimp on. Since the only attraction of the arcade game in any case was the graphics, once can appreciate the effort, even if it comes to so little. That is, however, a rubbish ending by any definition.
