Zybex is a shoot-em-up by Zeppelin Games. It’s one of the few shoot-em-up’s that I owned as a kid and I remember it being quite tough to play. It’s not a bad game for a budget release. The graphics are pretty good, there’s a lot of levels and power-ups, and the controls are decent. I didn’t get far enough to enjoy the later stages of Zybex, but now having gone through all of the game, it’s not bad at all…
Zybex is a horizontal Shoot-Em-Up that has you controlling a spaceman with a jet-pack, and your mission is to blast your way through the levels collecting tokens that allow access to later levels.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
Neil: I used an infinite lives cheat.
Vinny: I have since created a crazy hack for this game that has 25 extra in-game features; one of them being the game ending. You can download the crazy hack from the link area above.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have cleared the final level, an end-screen appears. The text reads ‘CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE COMPLETED ZYBEX AND GAINED YOUR FREEDOM‘. A strobing colour bar effect is displayed at the top and bottom of the screen. The game restarts on pressing the fire button.
Neil: It could have been better than this. Very simple ending to this one.
Vinny: I love this game and remember purchasing a copy on the day of its release. It was amazing value for only £2.99 and earned itself an overall score of 93% from ZZAP! 64 magazine. The graphics, music and game play really do shine. It’s so unfortunate that the ending is missing so many of those elements that the game comprises of. Maybe they just ran out of ideas. Still a good game 🙂
Andrew Fisher: I’ve always liked this game, a real bargain when you compare it to a full-price conversion like R-Type. I have finished it once, but boy is it tough. As for the ending, yes it’s a shame it isn’t better, but I bet they were running low on memory.
Gaz Spence: The first few Zeppelin releases were cracking VFM. I guess the ending to Zybex is what we’ve all grow to expect, i.e. less than satisfactory. Still, at least it’s not one of those irritating SEUs that just go one forever.
FINAL SAY: Hmmm… not very impressive.
