Karnov is a standard side scrolling arcade game by Data East. The arcade game was average, but unfortunately the C64 version is a very poor spectrum conversion. You control a Russian, fire-breathing, circus strongman called Karnov (appeared in later Data East games as a villain.), who’s mission is simply to find treasure. You have nine levels to fight through to get to the end…
Just an additional piece of information… Frank Gasking of GTW mentioned that there was a better version of Karnov in the pipeline. Full details can be found HERE.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Using an infinite lives cheat and level skipper.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have completed the ninth level, collected all pieces of the map and killed the final end-of-level bad guy the game is complete. You then get to see an animated Karnov, throwing gold coins in the air to celebrate his success in aquiring his fortune. Game credits appear at the bottom of the screen showing all the staff that worked on the game. The game then ends.
Neil: It would have been much better if the graphics weren’t ported from the spectrum. 4/10.
Vinny: This is the first time I’ve actually seen and played this game! I really love these style of graphics, but unfortunately, because it’s a Spectrum port, it’s let down by the awful scrolling, which is PAINFULLY slow 😦 It’s a shame because if you play this on an emulator and speed it up to 500%, it plays really well.
As for the ending… I quite like it! I love this style of design and think it’s a really cool ending. Obviously it isn’t perfect and it’s missing a few elements such as music and an epilogue, but I’d give it 6/10.
Frank Gasking: I think the Karnov ending is worth 6/10. I think mostly where it loses points is the lack of sound, but there is a nice little animation, a nice graphic and some fading in credits which was far more than I was ever expecting from the game. As for the game itself, I just wish it was so much better than it was….. being able to explore everywhere with the ladder was great, but the speed of the game just crippled it completely.
Brendan Phoenix: Good ending and faithful to the arcade original.
What a pity the port was awful, could have been a shed load’s better – missed opportunity.
Andy Vaisey: Yucky game redeemed by an okayish ending.
Andrew Fisher: Quite impressed by the ending, but I’ve never been a fan of the game itself or Electric Dreams’ decision to port the Speccy version straight to the C64.
FINAL SAY: Although the end isn’t too bad, it looks crap. It fails to make the grade.
G.E. RATING: 5 / 10
