Action Force by Virgin is a another C64 game based on the kids plastic action figures from the eighties (“I had two Action men” – Vinny).
The game itself is a side-scrolling shoot-em-up. Your mission is to recover important documents from an island which has been attacked by enemy forces. A buggy is sent out to retrieve the documents, so you have to protect it from enemy attacks by using your helicopter. It’s a very difficult task, as there are a lot of enemies planes to deal with and the landscape has many features that will destroy your aircraft should you collide with them. The graphics are ok, and it’s easy enough to control but the difficulty is a little too high. I couldn’t play this one for too long as it is far too easy to die.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used an infinite lives cheat.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: If you manage to beat the last level, there is an end sequence. The words ‘Well done’ flash across the top of the screen and a message appears to say that the data retrieval centre awaits the buggy with the recovered documents. An animated sequence follows that shows the buggy driving along a pier to the doors of the retrieval centre. The buggy stops and transmits the info into the building. A final message appears to confirm that the info was received and that you should return to action to retrieve more data (or play the game again in other words).
COMMENTS: Quite a surprise. I was certain this one had nothing at the end of it.
FINAL SAY: I’m very happy with this one. A nice conclusion to the mission with some decent graphics and animation. It’s not going to win an award, but it’s always nice to see a decent end sequence.
