Ultima III: Exodus is the third game of the fabulous Ultima collection by Origin. It’s a vast improvement on the second game built on the standard Ultima RPG foundations.
The aim of the game is to create, develop and improve your group of heroes as you wonder the lands in search of Exodus in an attempt to end its evil. This will mean hundreds of battles against various enemies and hours of exploration of the lands and dungeons before you finally piece together the information needed to defeat Exodus. There’s a lot to do and see, which will keep you busy for many hours.
Graphically it follows the simple style of the previous games but with improved colour and speed. As with most Origin products the emphasis is on slow, engrossing game play rather than gung-ho action and cool graphics.
It’s a classic RPG that all fans should play and complete at least once before moving on to it’s amazing sequel. Check this one out now…
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I followed some walkthroughs and maps which I found online.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: If you manage to get past the snake and battle all the way to the final chamber to face Exodus, your realise you are battling a machine rather than a creature. After inserting various cards into the consoles the game is beaten. Each console explodes and a page of text appears to conclude the story of Exodus. It confirms Sosaria is free from the evil of Exodus and that the future is unknown, but will continue in Ultima IV. Another message is displayed in the corner panel which reads ‘CONGRATULATIONS! THOU HAST COMPLETED EXODUS: ULTIMA 3 IN 00034082 MOVES. REPORT THY FEAT!‘. The amount of moves varies depending on how quickly you achieve victory. The game then needs restarting to play again.
Neil: I expected a simple ending as this game doesn’t rely on flash visuals. Worth playing this one, but the end is something you will forget in time. 2/10.
Vinny: AAAAAAAARRGH! A fooking RPG game! Noooooooooooo! 2/10 for the ending.
Gaz Spence: Well, the ending is an improvement on the first two games with a text epilogue of sorts, but really after all those moves it’s still pretty insulting.
Andrew Fisher: Fascinating to see that it keeps track of the number of moves taken! Hardly unexpected as a text ending.
This was the point that Ultima moved from BASIC to machine code, and also the point where Lord British (Richard Garriott) set up Origin Systems.
Andy Vaisey: Like Vinny, I’m not enamoured by RPG’s, even though the C64 group I’m in is working on one. The irony…
I’ll try an persuade Moloch to make a decent ending to ours, unlike this pile of text crap.
FINAL SAY: A great feeling to beat this one, but the ending isn’t so memorable.
