Ultima II: The Revenge of the Enchantress by Sierra Online is the second game in the legendary Ultima RPG series. Although it’s not a bad game, I personally think it is the worst game in the series…
The aim of the game is to seek out and destroy the evil enchantress Minax. This game is quite short once you have worked out what to do and it doesn’t have the same Ultima feel as the other games. I’m guessing this may have something to do with the fact that Origin didn’t release this game.
Unfortunately, the game looks and plays quite poorly, and it’s quite tricky to get your character up and running. It also takes place on earth at different historical periods, which sets it apart from the other Ultima games.
Overall I’d only recommend this one to hardcore Ultima fans as it’s quite fiddly, glitchy and not as enjoyable as the rest of the series…
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I followed some walkthroughs and poked about in the code to boost my character’s health and money.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The final battle with Minax is awkward as she keeps teleporting around the castle. Eventually she dies once you have hit her enough times. The screen starts to break up, piece by piece and the words ‘MINAX IS DEAD!! ALL HER WORKS SHALL DIE!’ appear at the bottom of the screen. The final scene shows our hero flying over the land in a space rocket. A final message appears at the bottom of the screen which reads ‘YOU HAVE DESTROYED MINAX!!! YOUR DEED WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR YEARS. THANKS FOR PLAYING ULTIMA II, NOW SOLVE …… THE WIZARD AND THE PRINCESS ……’.
Neil: A little better than I expected. The end animation is as jerky as the scrolling throughout the game. You won’t be missing out if you avoid this one. 2/10.
Vinny: Not really my type of game and definitely not my type of ending. 2/10 from me too.
Andrew Fisher: As with Ultima I, this is a conversion from the Apple II original. That’s why the animation and scrolling seem jerky, as they were not purpose-written for the C64. And hence a simplistic ending based on the original.
Andy Vaisey: A rather simple ending. This is not a good thing.
Brendan Phoenix: The old ending that plugs another game, they should be banned!
Gaz Spence: Frankly, the ending is dire – whether the game is an Apple II conversion or not. Here’s hoping the third Ultima ending is better.
FINAL SAY: I expected just a text message at the end of this one.
G.E. RATING: 2 / 10
