Saboteur by Durell is a ninja based arcade adventure game. It’s a Spectrum classic that has been ported directly to the C64, so it lacks in the graphics and sound departments as you would expect. If you can live with this, it’s not a bad game for it’s time. The aim is to locate a disk within the enemy base and escape within the allocated time. You can choose the level of difficulty, which increases the number of guards and decreases your time limit which make your job far more difficult. Combat is quite simple – you can punch, kick and throw items at enemies. The complex is quite large and confusing so a map is quite handy until you are familiar with the layout. Once you have mastered the lower levels, you can try the harder ones if you fancy a real challenge so it’s a game that has some replay value. I had beaten this game years ago, but never on the highest level, so I wanted to find out if there was anything at the end of it.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I stopped the clock and stopped my energy decreasing. Yes I cheated.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once the disk is collected and you have entered the helicopter the game is complete. The helicopter starts up and flies up out of the top of the screen. A message appears which reads ‘ESCAPE. DISK RETRIEVED. MISSION SUCCESSFUL‘. (“Retrieved” is displayed incorrectly).
COMMENTS:
Neil: It’s not too bad considering. Some poor animation and a short message, but that’s more than you normally get from a Spectrum port of this age. 3/10.
Vinny: I never really got into this game back in the day. It may have been something to do with the low ZZAP64 score, and the fact that it was a Speccy port.
Surprisingly enough, it’s quite a cool game. Okay – so the graphics and sound suck, but the game play is worth a look.
No surprises with this ending, though I do like the idea of the helicopter taking off. The programmer could have produced an epilogue and possibly an ending tune to spruce this up a little.
Andrew Fisher: It’s not a terrible game, just blighted by the poor presentation. Ending is very average, had seen it before. 3/10.
Brendan: Never a big fan of Durell games, this probably one of their better ones. You could also say Saboteur 2, but wasn’t it pretty much the same game with a female sprite?
Ending is ok I suppose.
FINAL SAY: I knew what to expect on this one.

Certainly very Spectrumy, but I think it kind of suited the atmosphere of these games: the emptiness, near-silence, and grim colour schemes working well with the premise of commando / spy making night raids, armed only with whatever improvised weapons they could scavenge. The endings weren’t particularly great, though. Triumphant cinematics might not have been appropriate (or possible), but they could have at least thrown some story text in. I never really knew why I was breaking into that building and stealing their data anyway…
