I stumbled on this game by complete accident… I was going through a load of games on the offline version of Gamebase 64 and came upon a game preview called Denniffia by a coder called Michal Bacik. The game looked really cool and so I clicked on the coder’s name to see if he had produced any other cool looking games, and it appears that he had! The strange thing is, these games don’t appear in the main game list and can only be viewed via the coder’s name. Anyway – one of Michal’s game really stood out for you, which was Magic Formula…
Magical Formula is a beautifully crafted static-screen platformer that is a delight to play. You play the part of the love deprived snail(!) Sonny who is in search of his beloved Dawny. Sonny has to fight his way through 24 levels of obstacles and nasties to find all the magical items, and give them to Wizard who will reunite them once more. With colour full screens, detailed sprites, and crisp sonix, does this game have a magic formula of an ending? (see what I did there?)…
The final game end bosses appear!
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used cracked version that allowed me to skip straight to the end! Obviously!
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you clean level 24, the words “WELL DONE” appear on the screen and then the scores are totted up before the ending loads…
The ending screen appears with a bitmap saying “THE END”, along with the message: “CONGRATULATIONS. NOW YOU CAN BE TOGETHER FOREVER!“. This is accompanied by a specific ending tune whilst Sonny and Dawny are reunited in love at the foot of the screen.
Vinny: I love this colourful game and ending. The only downside is that the end could have been a better – especially with it being a multiload game. Maybe a long animation and an epilogue would have done it. Anyway – 6/10 from me.
Andrew Fisher: I remember playing this back then and not persevering more than a couple of levels. I like the ending though.
Andy Vaisey: That’s a nice little ending! Simple, short but satisfying. Wish more were like that…
FINAL SAY: A cute, but simple ending.
G.E. RATING: 6 / 10
