Okay – so hands up who’s never heard of this game? Ah – I see most of you. Well I too hadn’t seen or heard of this game until team member, Brendan Phoenix, sent in the ending, and I was intrigued to see what kind of game it actually is…
Echo Hawk is your typical run of the mill shoot-em-up game that was released back in 1992. I doesn’t appear to have had a UK release, which is why most of us wouldn’t have seen it, and I only think it was released via a disk magazine in somewhere like Germany (please correct me if I’m wrong).
The game itself has some really nice title screen graphics and some fabulous music throughout, but unfortunately it lacks a little in game play. ‘Game over’ comes pretty quick and it’s almost impossible to get anywhere in the game without some kind of cheat…
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Brendan cheated through the game whereas I just used a cracked version that took me straight to the ending 😉
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have completed the final level, a nice, colourful bitmap appears with a cool sprite bob effect. An ending tune kicks in, and the epilogue appears line after line:
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU MADE IT!!
AFTER YOUR ATTACK ON MECA,
THE MECANOIDS GIVE UP AND
SIGN THE PEACE CONTRACT WITH
THE ALLIED ALIENS AND HUMANS!
YOU HAVE THE HONOUR TO RECEIVE
THE ‘UNITED SYSTEMS-MEDAIL’
FOR YOUR EXCELLENT MISSION!
WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS GAME,
AND WELCOME YOU SOON ON
YOURS, THE COMMANDER!
Vinny: Hmmmm… nice ending. It’s not brilliant, but the ending tune is and I like the colourful bitmap and effect. It’s also good to have an epilogue. 6/10 from me.
Brendan: OK little tune at the end, colourful little end screen and a little epilogue – 5/10 for me.
Andy Vaisey: Nice colourful scene style logo (betraying it’s roots?), decent music and message. Not brilliant, but not bad.
Andrew Fisher: Will have to check out the game, but that’s a nice ending – as Andy says, more typical of the demo scene coders who created a lot of the content for Magic Disk.
FINAL SAY: Echo Hawk has a nice enough ending… ending…. ending…. ending…. ending…
G.E. RATING: 5.5 / 10
