Why on earth has it taken me 21 years to play this game?! It’s so cool. Brendan kindly sent me the ending, but for some reason it had a bug in it that made our hero disappear during the ending sequence. I was sure it had something to do with the fact that the game was cracked, but I have since tried a few other versions and they do exactly the same. Obviously – the quality control department didn’t actually get to the end of the game to see the ending.
Anyway – a bloody great game (yes – I did actually play it!), which definitely deserved the 89% that ZZAP!64 gave it back in 1989. But what of the ending…

The rescue helicopter is on its way…

The End.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: We both used a cracked version 🙂
SO WHAT HAPPENS?:  Once our hero completes the final level, a helicopter appears from the right of the screen, pauses to pick up our hero, and shoots off to the right. The ending message then appears (see above screenshot).
COMMENTS:
Brendan: The ending text is exactly the same as the arcade (that had a static pic as well – surely they could have included that??). 2/10.
Vinny: Hmmm… maybe Brendan is missing a trick here, because the rescue helicopter doesn’t appear anywhere else in the game and so I’m presuming it’s unique and part of the ending. For that, I’m going to give it one point more. 3/10 from me.
Andrew Fisher: I’m guessing it has to do with sprite priorities, with the overlay it would have been difficult to make the man run up the ladder. (The conversion also misses out the very strange way the hero runs up the screen on completing a level in the arcade game, but that’s no real loss!)
Fairly average end sequence, re-uses the high score routine to display the end text (as sprites) over the background. 3/10.
FINAL SAY: Very quick and lackluster 😦

G.E. RATING: 2.5 / 10
